Join B'nai B'rith Omaha members at the next Breadbreakers Luncheon on February 27.
 
Many of you may not know it, but Omaha played a small, but significant role in helping Jews get out of the Soviet Union in the late 1980’s, where they were often trapped.
 
B'nai B'rith, the Jewish Federation and many Omahans opened their hearts and frequently their pocketbooks to help settle immigrants from the Soviet Union right here in the river city.
 
Recently, Omaha celebrated the 25th anniversary of the first arrival of Soviet Jews.  We helped to make history, and Bob Goldberg, the Director of Strategic Initiatives from the Jewish Federation staff, will recount some of the proud details in the story of how we helped save and improve the lives of many Russians.
 
To help him tell the story, Russians Anna Yuz-Mosenkis and Marina Sadofsky will join him.  We may also have a special surprise guest to recount some of the inside details of all these events.

So join us for lunch, meet someone new, make a new friend and enjoy a very, very proud moment in world history that unfolded right here in Omaha.

The Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado has embarked on “reimagining” itself for the future – reflecting the Denver community’s feedback that a change is needed, but with no consensus on what the change should be! In 2010, a strategic planning process began to consider a wide variety of strategies and business models for Federation. Ten scenarios were whittled down to one recommendation with five areas of focus:

1) Empowering Jewish philanthropy
2) Engaging the next generation in being Jewish
3) Serving the most vulnerable
4) Supporting and advocating on behalf of Israel
5) Mobilizing the community in times of crisis

Task force transition teams have begun the work to make recommendations as to what the new organization might look like.

Doug Seserman, Allied Jewish Federation President and CEO, will speak to B’nai B’rith on a) why change? b) what the vision is for supporting the local Jewish community, and c) the current work and timelines of the transition teams. Q&A will follow.

Over 120 young professionals came together on February 20, 2013, for the B'nai B'rith and Sixth & I Historic Synagogue's monthly trivia night.  Attendees were questioned on history, politics, pop culture, and more.

The March 2013 trivia will be skipped due to Passover, but we will be back at Sixth & I on April 27 for the next round.

The Zionist Organization of America presented a new film on February 20 that examines the brilliant life of Theodor Herzl who singlehandedly began the movement that led to Israel's founding.

The program was hosted at The Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan,

The B'nai B'rith Henry Monsky Lodge in Omaha, Neb. welcomed Mayor Jim Suttle to their latest Breadbreakers Luncheon on February 20.

Mayor Suttle is up for re-election and addressed members as part of the B'nai B'rith Omaha Mayoral Candidate speaker series. He let attendees know his positions and what he wants to accomplish if he should win a second term.

Councilwoman Jean Stothert spoke earlier; Dan Welch and Dave Nabity are due to speak before the primary election.  See all the candidates.  Ask them questions.  Be informed.

The program, hosted at the Blumkin Home Auditorium, was free to attend with an optional Kosher lunch is $11.

The B'nai B'rith Young Professionals Network-NYC partnered with Jspace to host a Fundraiser For Sandy Relief at Redemption Bar NYC on February 20, 2013.

Guests made a minimum donation of $40 per person for two hours of open bar, appetizers and one raffle ticket.

All proceeds will benefit the B'nai B'rith Disaster Relief Fund.

Members of B'nai B'rith Denver came together to support the community on February 17 for the Peanut Butter Plan.  Guests made PBJ's and passed them out to people in need in the downtown Denver area.

THE DONATIONS: Each Peanut Butter Plan participant donated one jar of Peanut Butter and one jar of Jelly, plus two or more loafs of bread.

THE MISSION: After the PBJ's were made (at about 2:00), members formed carpools to the Denver Rescue Mission neighborhood to hand out the sandwiches. After giving food to many of the people attendees found on the streets and in the parks, they donated left over food to Samaritan House and other agencies in need.

The program was co-sponsored by AJC, B'nai Brith Denver, Moishe House and JConnect.

Rich and Fran Juro have visited over 100 countries.  On Wednesday, February 6, 2013, they discussed their recent visit to North Korea at the weekly B'nai B'rith Omaha Breadbreakers' luncheon.

B'nai B'rith International joined countless other organizations to promote the Interfaith call-in day to prevent gun violence on February 4, 2012.  Members were encouraged to call their Senators and Members of Congress to insist that they act to prevent gun violence. The campaign's message was to ensure that the voices of faithful Americans ring throughout the halls of Congress.

The organizers knew that there are differences in viewpoint and asked callers to convey whichever policies they were comfortable. The major components of legislation that Congress is considering include:

• Require universal background checks for all gun purchases
• Ban semi-automatic assault weapons and high-capacity magazines
• Make gun trafficking a federal crime
• Improve access to mental health services
  

B'nai B'rith encouraged members to tell them that gun violence prevention laws work.

Callers recognized themselves as members of the faith community while advocating against violence and emphasized the policies that they personally supported.
