Delivering Aid in Africa

In the summer of 2011, 11 million people in Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Somalia found themselves in dire need of humanitarian relief to combat the region’s terrible famine, caused by the worst drought to hit Africa in more than 50 years.

The B’nai B’rith Disaster Relief Fund worked with the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief, of which we are a member, IsraAID (the Israel Forum for International Humanitarian Aid, of which B’nai B’rith is a founding member), the United Nations and Operation Blessing Kenya, to provide urgently needed food on the Kenya-Somalia border in a facility sheltering 85,000 people. Additional distributions took place in surrounding communities in Kenya that were providing safe haven to Somali refugees. To help protect pregnant Somali and Kenyan women being treated in hospitals, the team distributed 1,000 mosquito nets to help ward off diseases.

In 2007, B’nai B’rith participated in an IsraAID joint relief team to Kenya where 180,000 refugees, almost all Muslim Somalis, remain on the border of Somalia. This was the first Israeli relief team to ever access this remote and volatile area of Kenya since refugees began flowing across the boarder 15 years ago. Acting in close consultation with the United Nations, the team provided clothing to 3,500 children.
