B'nai B'rith International (BBI), in partnership with IsraAID, the I
srael Forum for International Humanitarian Aid, is helping to provide thousands of meals to an estimated 35,000 Georgian war refugees. BBI is one of the founding members of IsraAID. The 11-member mission will focus on providing food to refugees in Gori and other areas of conflict in the war-torn country. The group arrived in Tbilisi on Sept. 4 and will assist current efforts over a two-week period.
"The situation in Georgia remains critical and thousands of people have been displaced. It is our responsibility to assist in humanitarian efforts in this region, providing these children and adults with one of the most basic human needs: food," said Daniel S. Mariaschin, executive vice president of B'nai B'rith International. "Working with our partner, IsraAID, we can be on the ground and provide a quick response in these uncertain times."
The team will include Israel Flying Aid founder and director Gal Lousky and chef Elan Roberg, who will establish a massive field kitchen with equipment brought from Israel. B'nai B'rith World Center director and IsraAID board member Alan Schneider will join the team on Sunday. Local cooks will be integrated into the project which will provide thousands of hot meals daily to the refugees who have pitched makeshift tents near their damaged or destroyed homes. The IsraAID team will also organize post-trauma counseling and other activities for thousands of children who have not returned to school due to the continuing crisis in their country.
