B'nai B'rith Delegation Meets With Key Costa Rican Government Leaders; Questions Recent Government Decisions On Israel
A B'nai B'rith International delegation met on April 4 with two high-level members of Costa Rica's government: Bruno Stagno, Costa Rica's foreign minister, and Francisco Pacheco, the president of the Costa Rican Congress. B'nai B'rith leaders conveyed great concern over Costa Rica's policies regarding Israel and the Middle East. In the meeting with the foreign minister, BBI President Moishe Smith expressed his displeasure over Costa Rica's 2006 decision to move its embassy in Israel from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, as well as Costa Rica's recent decision to recognize a Palestinian state. "It is disturbing to consider these decisions could represent reversal in policy toward Israel, given the country's previous friendly relations with the Jewish state," Smith said.
The BBI delegation, led by Smith, also included President of B'nai B'rith District 23 Daniel Belozercovsky, Executive Vice President of District 23 Alberto Jabiles, and local Costa Rican Jewish leaders.
