Today, October 13, 2008, marks the 165th anniversary of B'nai B'rith International (BBI), celebrating a long and illustrious history of service to the community and devotion to Jewish and humanitarian causes. We mark this special occasion with the unveiling of the theme for our yearlong celebration: "B'nai B'rith International – Meeting the Unmet Needs of Your Community and Your World." BBI President Moishe Smith, stated, "In commemoration of the plan set forth by 12 men in 1843 at Sinsheimer's Café in New York's Lower East Side to help Jewish widows and orphans who had nowhere else to turn, B'nai B'rith today recommits itself to these core values. BBI's members and supporters are still driven by the ideal that working together, we can provide help, we can impact change, and we can make the world a better place."
"Though the world has changed drastically since B'nai B'rith's creation, we are still committed to those original tenets of meeting unmet needs. We continually strive to improve the world by tackling the issues that we, as a Jewish organization, and the world as a whole value," explained BBI Chairman of the Executive, Dennis W. Glick.
In the coming year, BBI will focus on critical issues through work with community outreach and programming, which are the cornerstones of our organization, including a new Access to Healthcare Initiative, which will be introduced this fall. Through our Center for Human Rights and Public Policy (CHRPP), our Center for Senior Services (CSS), and our Center for Community Action (CCA), we remain committed to the values set forth by our founders, looking forward to a bright future.
"Our role today, both internationally and domestically, is more important now than ever before," BBI Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin said. "With so many political and economic changes taking place, our participation in global public diplomacy, human rights, and the assistance we provide to people of every race and religion makes our global presence critical."
