BBI Condemns Grave Desecration in Bucharest
In light of the desecration of an estimated 200 graves in Bucharest’s largest Jewish cemetery that took place on Oct. 23, B’nai B’rith International (BBI) is urging the Romanian government to vigorously pursue the offenders who vandalized these sites. “The defiling of these grave sites is an indignity to the memories of those buried there and their families,” BBI Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin said. “The fact that such travesties still occur in many corners of the world serves as a reminder that anti-Semitism persists globally and we must remain vigilant in our fight in order to eradicate such horrid acts.” The Romanian Ministry of Justice has promised to conduct a comprehensive investigation. BBI will continue to monitor the situation and will remain actively involved until a proper resolution is met. BBI has had a longstanding presence in Romania, dating to the formation of a lodge in 1888.
