B'nai B'rith World Center Director Alan Schneider traveled to Myanmar as a member of a humanitarian team organized by IsraAid - The Israel Forum for International Humanitarian Aid - of which B'nai B'rith is a founding member. This is the third IsraAid team to travel to the Southeast Asian nation since the devastating Cyclone Nargis made landfall on May 2. To date, reports are that 130,000 people have died. Two earlier IsraAid relief teams consisting of nine members of "F.I.R.S.T. (Fast Israel Rescue and Search Teams) and "Israel Flying Aid" have been working since shortly after the cyclone hit to assist the victims, distributing 10 tons of relief aid, including food, medicine, and water purification relief items. They have also trained 500 Myanmar health professionals in methods of emergency medicine.
The new team received permission to visit the disaster area in cooperation with partners in the local business community in order to determine what emergency medical services are needed. The first IsraAid teams, funded by B'nai B'rith International in partnership with other Jewish organizations and Federations, was one of the first foreign relief teams to reach the Myanmar capital of Yagon; arriving just 36 hours after the cyclone struck.
Due to the success of the IsraAid mission in Myanmar, the State of Israel was asked to participate in a major conference organized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United Nations to discuss enhancement of relief and rehabilitation efforts to areas affected by the cyclone. The conference, which convened in Yagon on May 25, will mark the first time ever that the United Nations and ASEAN would meet in the Myanmar capital.
IsraAid's effort is unique and has enabled Israel to be viewed as a serious player in the international aid arena. B'nai B'rith is proud to play an integral role with this effort.
