The B'nai B'rith International disaster relief fund has geared up to help the victims of the May 3 cyclone in Myanmar. The cyclone killed at least 22,000 and casualty reports are still coming in. Millions could be homeless.B'nai B'rith will allocate $10,000 to help partner IsraAid send 10 relief workers, including paramedics, doctors, nurses, and water specialists, to Myanmar. The team is cooperating with the local United Nations office, as well as Israel's embassy in the region.
"Disaster relief is a crucial part of the B'nai B'rith mission, and it is incumbent upon us, in a disaster of this magnitude, to do all we can," said BBI Honorary President Joel S. Kaplan, who chairs the BBI disaster relief program. "During her 60 years, Israel has always been a reliable neighbor in the global community. Having relief teams from Israel race to help those in need around the world embodies the spirit upon which Israel lives."
B'nai B'rith is a founding partner of Tel Aviv-based IsraAID, the Israel Forum for International Humanitarian Aid, which is an umbrella organization for more than 35 Israeli and Jewish non-governmental organizations.
B'nai B'rith International's disaster relief fund is designed to help the community at large, regardless of religion. In a disaster, BBI partners with local relief agencies to get help to where it's most needed.
"A disaster such as this demonstrates how imperative it is for nations to band together," said BBI President Moishe Smith. "B'nai B'rith has made disaster relief a priority since 1865, and the BBI Disaster Relief Fund has provided aid to populations affected by natural and man-made catastrophes around the world."
