B'nai B'rith International President Moishe Smith will participate in the 65th anniversary celebrations of the largest Jewish organization in Cuba on June 7. About 200 people, including community leaders, are expected when B'nai B'rith Maimonides Cuba holds its anniversary celebration at the Jewish Community Center in Havana."What an incredible accomplishment to celebrate so many years in Cuba," Smith said. "The 80 or so active members in B'nai B'rith Cuba have truly impacted the Cuban Jewish community, as well as the broader Cuban society, with their ongoing generosity and kindness."
Stanley Cohen, who founded the B'nai B'rith Cuban Jewish Relief Project in 1995 and serves as international chairman, will also attend and help lead the mission with 24 members from the United States.
The B'nai B'rith Maimonides Cuba chapter is involved in a myriad of humanitarian work including a Tzedaka Project, which helps retired people with pensions of $10 or less per month. The Maimonides chapter also helps restore and repair homes that are damaged, and distributes medicine, clothing, and other humanitarian supplies that are given to them by the B'nai B'rith Cuban Jewish Relief Project. All these efforts are aimed at both the Jewish and secular communities.
Simon Goldztein Rosenfeld is the new president of B'nai B'rith Maimonides Cuba, replacing longtime member Isaac Rousso who recently passed away.
Cohen has made nearly 40 trips to Cuba, and notes each one brings a renewed appreciation for Maimonides Cuba members: "I never cease to be amazed at the spirit and altruism of the members of Maimonides Cuba. This relatively small, but active group of Jews in Cuba, demonstrates every day the concept of Tikkun Olam – healing the world."
