BBI Remembers Victims of AMIA Terror Attack in Argentina

Justice Still Lacking 14 Years Later

Once again, we will mark the anniversary of the Argentina-Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) building bombing with no justice in sight. The attack on July 18, 1994, on the largest Jewish community in Latin America left 85 dead and 300 injured. No one has ever been brought to justice for this nefarious attack.

"It is inexplicable that officials have yet to act definitively," said B'nai B'rith International (BBI) President Moishe Smith. "Each year that passes without anyone being held accountable emboldens the terrorists who carried out the attack."

The Argentine state prosecutor concluded in a report in 2006 that Hezbollah, which is Iran-supported, was responsible for the bombing. In 800 pages, the Argentine prosecutor detailed how Iran's then-president, Hashemi Rafsanjani, and other top government officials worked through the terrorist arm Hezbollah to kill Jews in Buenos Aires. The report was the first major step toward justice. But the investigation has stalled since then.

For 14 years, BBI has pressed officials to follow every lead, and urged officials that those responsible must be prosecuted. The report from 2006 was an important investigative step. But it is not enough.

"It is never too late for justice to be served," said BBI Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin. "The slow pace of this process, now counted in years, is inexcusable. We must be vigilant, and never forget this terror attack."

With its widespread presence in Latin America, including Argentina, BBI has been fighting for a proper, thorough, and complete investigation since the attack in 1994. B'nai B'rith continues to remember the victims and their families, and looks forward to the day when the terrorists are finally held accountable.
