B'nai B'rith Expresses Condolences
to Goldwasser, Regev Families

B'nai B'rith World Center Director Alan Schneider conveyed condolences on behalf of B'nai B'rith International (BBI) during a visit with the families of Israel Defense Forces reserve soldiers Sergeant Major Ehud (Udi) Goldwasser and Master Sergeant Eldad Regev.

Regev and Goldwasser were killed in the July 12, 2006, Hezbollah attack on northern Israel—along with eight other soldiers—which ignited the Second Lebanon War. The bodies of Goldwasser and Regev were returned to Israel last month, after Hezbollah refused to release any information on their fate since the attack. During his visit, Schneider met with Goldwasser's parents, Miki and Shlomo, and his wife Karnit, and with Regev's father Zvi and brothers Eyal, Beni, and Ofer. He also presented the following letter to the families, signed by BBI President Moishe Smith, Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin, and World Center Chairman Haim Katz:

"Together with the citizens of the State of Israel and the nation of Israel around the world, we grieve along with you. Ever since July 12, 2006, we have waited, hoped, and prayed along with you for good news about the fate of this brave son and soldier of Israel.  We followed with awe the tremendous efforts you made, with great fortitude, to find out their fate. At every meeting we held with international leaders we pleaded with them to help in securing information about Israel's missing soldiers. We cried with you last week when it became apparent that evil enemies had toyed with your emotions for over two years and that your son had been killed by Hezbollah in its unwarranted attack two years ago.

"The citizens of Israel, with the support of world Jewry, will have to remain strong in the face of these intractable enemies and to protect the things they hold dear. Despite your terrible loss we hope you will find the strength to overcome your grief and continue your productive lives as a symbol that 'The eternity of Israel shall not falter.'"
