B'nai B'rith International Commends Argentina for AMIA indictments

B’nai B’rith International commends Argentina for continuing to seek justice in the 1994 bombing of the Argentina-Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) building – in the heart of Latin America’s largest Jewish community – in July of 1994 that killed 85 and injured 300.

A federal judge indicted former President Carlos Menem, a former judge, the head of the intelligence agency, a former police chief and three others, calling them, “abettors of concealment.” The indictment also said that the accused abused their authority and tampered with evidence.

“This is an important step forward on the bumpy road to justice in this terror attack,” B’nai B’rith President Moishe Smith said. “It is encouraging to see movement in this case, 15 years after the depraved bombing. The Argentine government’s renewed commitment to holding accountable those responsible for the barbaric attack, or those who failed to properly investigate it, clearly demonstrates the world will not forget acts of terror.”

Three years ago, the Argentine state prosecutor concluded in a 300-page report that Iran-supported Hezbollah was responsible for the attack. The report noted that Iran’s then-president, Hashemi Rafsanjani, along with other top government leaders, used Tehran’s terror machine, Hezbollah, to kill Jews in Argentina.

The Argentine prosecutor previously announced that he is seeking the extradition of seven Iranians for their possible roles in the attack. Current Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi is among those Argentina is seeking to extradite. At the time of the attack, Vahidi was in charge of al Quds, the branch of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard that works overseas.

“The indictments demonstrate that time will not run out on achieving justice,” B’nai B’rith Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin said. “Iran has been an international danger for decades, and these indictments will remind the world that Iran’s brutality knows no borders.”

B’nai B’rith has a strong presence throughout Latin America, and for 15 years has been fighting for a thorough investigation of the attack.
