B’nai B’rith International (BBI) is sending a delegation of 50 people from 11 countries to monitor the Durban Review Conference on racism in Geneva. The international group, led by Head of Delegation and Honorary President Richard D. Heideman and BBI Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin, will be on the ground in Geneva, carefully observing the proceedings.
As an organization dedicated to global human rights, B’nai B’rith will call attention and speak out if the conference abandons its mission of combating global racism and intolerance and degenerates into another anti-Israel conference.
The original 2001 World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance collapsed in so much anti-Israel venom that B’nai B’rith, along with Israel and other non-governmental organizations, walked out in protest. Heideman, a distinguished Washington, D.C., attorney, also led that delegation on behalf of BBI.
B’nai B’rith International is an accredited non-governmental organization (NGO) in the United Nations and its many bodies. As the only Jewish organization with a full time office dedicated to United Nations affairs, BBI is well-equipped to monitor the conference.
Interviews with Heideman, Mariaschin, and BBI Director of U.N. Affairs David Michaels are available in Geneva.
