U.N. Secretary-General Addresses B'nai B'rith Global Round Table

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed about 200 people during a conversation with the B’nai B’rith International Global Round Table on June 10. The group meets regularly to discuss current global issues, in a series titled “The Human Face of Global Affairs.”

In the “off the record” meeting at the Czech Center in New York, Global Round Table members, including diplomats and young professionals from diverse backgrounds, raised issues including those related to the Middle East, the status of women, genocide, the role of civil society, and education for peace.

Prior to the address, B’nai B’rith leaders held a short private meeting with the secretary-general.

Director of the B’nai B’rith International Global Round Table Harriet Mandel welcomed the guests, and B’nai B’rith Chairman of the Executive Dennis Glick and Ambassador Martin Palous, the permanent representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations, offered remarks. B’nai B’rith International Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin helped lead the discussion with Ban.

“Given the importance of the United Nations in world affairs, speaking directly with Secretary-General Ban afforded a wonderful opportunity to get a global perspective from this international leader,” Glick said. “There is no better way to foster international understanding than to have face-to-face conversation.”

“These committed, talented young people are insightful and thoughtful,” Mariaschin added. “And seeing the depth of their knowledge and understanding about complex world issues is heartening.”

Members of The Global Round Table meet regularly to discuss current global issues, and undertake personal partnerships. The program offers future global leaders the chance to build relationships, counter stereotypes, and impact policy.

B’nai B’rith International has a full-time office dedicated to United Nations Affairs and has been active at the world body since its inception.
