The foreign aid bill passed by Congress and signed by President Obama on Dec. 16, promising $2.22 billion in security assistance to Israel, reaffirms the strong ties between the United States and Israel.
“The level of commitment to the State of Israel demonstrated by the U.S. government is both prudent and necessary,” said B’nai B’rith International President Dennis W. Glick. “It is important for us to show that we support Israel, and this piece of legislation and the financial support it promises do just that.”
The bill also includes a provision to provide $500 million to the Palestinian Authority, under the condition that the body recognizes the State of Israel, renounces violence, and adheres to all previously signed agreements with Israel.
“We support this legislation as part of the U.S. government’s $30 billion commitment to Israel over the next decade,” said B’nai B’rith International Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin. “The friendship and cooperation between the United States and Israel is important to both countries. This action further solidifies that bond and promises a continued relationship for the foreseeable future.”
