B’nai B’rith International (BBI) is joining with New York's The Jewish Week, the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists, and other major Jewish organizations in co-sponsoring a “Counter-Conference” to the controversial United Nations Durban Review Conference (DRC), or ‘Durban II,’ being held in Geneva April 20-24.The Counter-Conference will be held April 20-24 at the Fordham Law School, 100 West 62nd Street in New York City. On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, the conference will run from 12 Noon to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday’s session is scheduled from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m.
Although the overall conference will address the issues of racism, racial discrimination, genocide, xenophobia, gender and religious discrimination, each day will have a specific focus and will include presentations by leading experts in these areas: Monday will feature an overview, Tuesday will deal with Current Issues in Racial Discrimination, Wednesday will look at Religious Intolerance and Discrimination, Thursday, Racism and Genocide, and Friday will look at Durban II and Freedom of Speech. Each session will also feature live updates from the Durban II Conference in Geneva.
B’nai B’rith will be represented by Eric Fusfield, deputy director of the Center for Human Rights and Public Policy, speaking on Europe’s Response to Durban II.
National and local leaders of the organization have called upon members in New York and adjacent communities to participate in the counter-conference program.
B’nai B’rith International has sent a delegation of 50 B’nai B’rith International leaders, representing 11 of the more than 50 counties in which B’nai B’rith has a presence, to monitor proceedings at Durban II in Geneva.
