As a paratrooper and an intelligence officer he fought in four wars: the 1956 Sinai Campaign, the 1967 Six Day war, the 1973 Yom Kippur war, (he was in the commando that crossed the Suez canal) and the 1982 Lebanon war. In the 2006 Lebanon war he served as a volunteer on the Lebanese border.

An author of world renown, Bar-Zohar is the official biographer of David Ben-Gurion, Israel's founding father, and of Shimon Peres, Israel's current President. He is the author of 35 books of history and fiction. His novel "Enigma" was made into a movie starring Martin Sheen and Derek Jacobi.

A legislator, he served two terms in the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament, and chaired the Committee of Education and Cultural Arts, the Sports Committee and the France-Israel Friendship League. He was also a member of the Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee and Israel's representative in the Council of Europe. Closely associated to Israeli leaders as Moshe Dayan, Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres, Bar-Zohar also was Benyamin Netanyahu's partner in promoting the direct election of a Prime Minister.

A professor at Haifa University in Israel and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, he taught courses about the conflict in the Middle East, Israel's defense policy and the Holocaust.

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1938, Bar-Zohar immigrated to Israel in 1948 and grew up in a poor neighborhood in Jaffa. He has a B.A. in Political Science from Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Paris, in France.

Bar-Zohar has had a distinguished career as a writer and has won the following awards:

Ben-Gurion award; Knight of the Legion d’Honneur, France; Knight of Madara, Bulgaria; Doctor Honoris Causa, University of Sofia; French Academy Award; Israel Sokolov Award [The Israeli Pulitzer]; The International Migration Award.

Bar-Zohar's first book, Suez Top Secret, dealt with the secret alliance between France and Israel during the Sinai campaign. He later wrote, among others: The Avengers; Embassies in Crisis; Spies in the Promised Land; Massacre in Munich (with Eitan Haber); Lionhearts, etc. His book Bitter Scent exposed the infiltration of Nazis into L'Oreal, the world's largest cosmetics company, and its dealings with the Arab Boycott. Beyond Hitler’s Grasp: The Heroic Rescue of 50,000 Bulgarian Jews, described the most important rescue of Jews from the Holocaust in World War Two.

Michael Bar-Zohar is the official biographer of David Ben-Gurion, the founder of the State of Israel. He spent most of the years 1964-1978 writing Ben-Gurion biography. In 1986, this book was published in a special centennial edition in eighteen languages, including Chinese and Arabic.

Michael Bar-Zohar recently published the biography of Shimon Peres, that describes the dramatic life and times of Israel's President; his activities at the head of the Defense Ministry, the alliance with France, the Sinai Campaign, the building of the nuclear reactor in Dimona, the secret relations with Germany, the Entebbe rescue and the controversial Oslo agreements.

Bar Zohar has also published several novels, some under the pen-name Michael Barak and Michael Hastings, and the latest under his real name.

Professor Bar-Zohar is one of the most popular Israeli speakers in the US today. When he is in the US, he speaks almost daily throughout the country for various Jewish organizations, the Israeli government, Foreign Affairs associations, universities and Christian groups. He is often interviewed in the American media, and has been hosted by CNN News, ABC, CBS, NBC, Larry King Live, Nightline, C-Span etc.

Professor Bar-Zohar lives in Tel-Aviv and spends six months a year speaking and lecturing in the United States.
