B’nai B’rith International submitted the following Letter to the Editor to the Washington Post: Jimmy Carter whitewashes a vital piece of information in his support of the Hamas-Fatah alliance (“Support the Palestinian Unity Government,” May 4)—Hamas calls for Israel’s destruction.
It’s hard to see how this reconciliation could possibly lead to peace with Israel, when Hamas, by order of its charter, does not recognize the Jewish State. No matter how hard Carter tries to make the puzzle fit, Hamas leadership has proven time and again its interest is destructive, and not in the least, constructive.
This is a terror group that continues to fire rockets and mortars on Israeli civilians, hides its munitions among its own civilian population and has a close relationship with the Iranian regime.
The tail is wagging the dog here. Carter continues to give a free pass to an organization that continues to embrace terror, as evidenced most recently by its public mourning of Osama bin Laden.
As usual, Carter puts all of the burden on Israel.
Absent recognition there can be no negotiation. Absent negotiation there can be no peace.
