At a ceremony Nov. 16 in a stately sun-lit room at the Romanian Embassy in Washington, D.C., the Romanian government recognized Daniel S. Mariaschin, executive vice president of B’nai B’rith International, for his involvement with Holocaust research and remembrance.
The award was first announced Oct. 8 in Bucharest at the dedication of a memorial to Holocaust victims in Romania. Romanian President Traian Basescu awarded Mariaschin in absentia the Romanian Order of Merit Commander Class for his work with the Elie Wiesel International Commission for the Study of the Holocaust.
Romanian Secretary of State Bogdan Aurescu, on the first day of a North American tour, as well as Romanian Ambassador to the United States Adrian Cosmin Vierita, attended the Washington ceremony among a group of Romanian and American dignitaries. Iulian Fota, presidential adviser on national security matters, officiated at the decoration ceremony.
Mariaschin’s award showcased Romania’s appreciation for his personal efforts with the Commission.
