B’nai B’rith International (BBI) member Alan Barry was honored at the Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) National Convention on Aug. 9 in
Chicago, receiving the Arthur and Simi Teich Award, which is given to alumni who thrive in their occupations. BBI President Moishe Smith spoke to members of the national fraternity, addressing issues including the relationship between Israel and the United Nations, and disaster relief in Peru and Myanmar. Smith also presented Barry with the B’nai B’rith Ladder of Leadership, President’s Roundtable Pin in recognition of his generous support of BBI activities.
Barry, an AEPi alumnus and former COO of the Masco Corporation, helped forge a partnership between the fraternity and B’nai B’rith.
“Through our partnership with AEPi, we hope to spread the message of tolerance and mutual understanding on college campuses nationwide,” Smith said. “Under the Greek Paradigm, students involved in fraternities and sororities become leaders socially and philanthropically. We are thrilled to have both past and present members of AEPi dedicated to helping B’nai B’rith International in our numerous endeavors.”
Gary Javitch, a BBI Life Member who is currently on the Board of Governors, was also acknowledged at the convention. Javitch, whose Gary Javitch Family Foundation recently made a $100,000 donation to B’nai B’rith to support next generation programming between BBI and AEPi, was named an honorary fraternity member.
Also in Chicago, Smith attended the Israel Amplified program, which was a three-day dialogue on the State of Israel open to members of college fraternities and sororities. Smith led a BBI presentation on Aug. 11 and served as a member on a panel, discussing the necessity for Israel activism and the country’s place in the world today.
