In celebration of B’nai B’rith 165th anniversary, the Albert Einstein Medical Center hosted an award luncheon and reception on Dec. 15.The Albert Einstein Medical Center was founded by B’nai B’rith in 1865. It was formerly known as the Jewish Hospital of Philadelphia.
Preceding the ceremony, members of B’nai B’rith’s Liberty Region were given a private tour of Frank Synagogue, which was dedicated in 1901. It is the only synagogue in the country that is located on the grounds of a hospital.
The Albert Einstein Medical Center President and CEO Barry R. Freedman presented a plaque to B’nai B’rith, which was accepted by Deborah Auerbach-Deutsch, BBI Vice President of Communications, on behalf of BBI Chairman of the Executive Dennis W. Glick and Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin.
Richard Morris, President of the Liberty Region, made a presentation to the Albert Einstein Medical Center in commemoration of its health care contributions to the local community. Morris also read a proclamation by Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter and Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell, which honored B’nai B’rith for its 165-year history.
The ceremony and luncheon were followed by a lecture: “From Smallpox to Stem Cells: the Jewish Approach to Medical Ethics Throughout the Ages.” The speaker was Rabbi Edward Reichman, MD, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
