Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz Receives B’nai B’rith Heritage Award

B’nai B’rith International presented U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) with the B’nai B’rith Heritage Award on May 20, which honors her role in the creation of Jewish American Heritage Month.

The award was given by BBI’s Chairman for Philanthropic and Charitable Giving Bruce Pascal as part of B’nai B’rith’s Jewish American Heritage Breakfast, co-sponsored with the American Sephardi Federation and held at the recently-completed U.S. Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C.

“I thank B’nai B’rith for all they do for the Jewish community,” said Wasserman Schultz. “It is such an honor—not just to receive an award from your organization, but to feel like I am part of a truly caring Jewish community.”

Danielle Borrin, of the Office of Public Engagement, presented the assembly with President Barack Obama’s official proclamation, which declares May as Jewish American Heritage Month.

Wasserman Schultz has sponsored Jewish American Heritage Month before the House these past four years.

The breakfast also included a presentation on “Judaism Then and Now” by retired American history specialist from the Library of Congress Marvin Kranz and a performance by the 4th grade choir at the Jewish Primary Day School of Washington, D.C.

Gwen Zuares, chair of the B’nai B’rith Center for Jewish Culture, hosted the program.
