An International Conference on Strategic Challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean; With Participants From the United States, Albania, Britain, Greece, Israel, Russia and Turkey

B’nai B’rith International and The Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies will jointly convene its second major international conference on “Strategic Challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean” at Bar-Ilan University in Israel on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
The Albanian minister of foreign affairs will speak, as well as Greek and Turkish diplomats. Former Likud Minister Gideon Sa’ar will deliver the closing address on “Israel’s Challenges in the Regional Strategic Environment.” The nations of the Mediterranean and particularly its eastern basin, including Israel, are very much a focal point of current international tensions. They also represent a meeting point of civilizations, both historically and culturally. They sit astride some of the world’s most important trade routes and avenues of strategic access between Asia and the west. These nations continue to face dramatic challenges and dangers, as well as opportunities. |

The international conference is a partnership between B’nai B’rith International and The Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies. It will survey the ongoing chaotic conditions in collapsed and failed states in the region; the rise and fall of Islamist forces in littoral lands, specifically Syria and Libya; and the emergence of new alliances, bolstered—among other factors—by energy developments.
“We are thrilled to partner again with The Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies. This conference will provide further insight into refugee issues, regional cooperation, Iranian expansionism and superpower competition. We will also look closely at the economic relationship between eastern Mediterranean countries,” B’nai B’rith International President Gary P. Saltzman and B’nai B’rith International CEO Daniel S. Mariaschin said.
Participants will examine the ever-changing landscape from several regional and external perspectives. Their objective will be to chart options for cooperation and emphasize the need for new, sophisticated and multi-layered security architecture in the Mediterranean in which Israel can play an active role.
The conference will also honor Jacqueline Kahanoff, by offering insights into the role of cultural affinities and identities, as well as of regional institutions, in the Mediterranean.
The conference will be held in the Nano-Technology Auditorium (Building 206) on the Bar-Ilan University campus in Israel on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The proceedings will be in English, with simultaneous Hebrew translation, and is open to the public and media.
