A main goal of B'nai B'rith International (BBI) is to teach and spread the lessons of tolerance. With violence and hate crimes mounting in the United States, BBI has developed a proactive response. Since 1999, B'nai B'rith's Enlighten America program has encouraged middle- and high-school-aged children in the United States to take a stance against prejudice.
In school contests students explain what this means to them — through words or through art (see above, 2007 winning art by Kelly Maset, T.H. Rogers Middle School, Houston). The Enlighten America program asks students to make a pledge that encourages them to consider and respect the freedoms and rights they have as citizens. To address respect for others and personal responsibility, Enlighten America provides curriculum materials and theater programs for school assemblies.
Since its inception, Enlighten America has expanded its support of essay and art contests around the country. Recently, Comerica Bank sponsored contests in Detroit, Los Angeles, and Houston, while Popp Telecommunications in Minnesota teamed up with BBI for a community writing contest. Since 2004, BBI has worked with the Sons of Italy to bring creative writing contests to students in New York, Philadelphia, and cities in New Jersey.
