Germany has come under criticism from both Israel’s Ambassador Yakov Hadas-Handelsman and the director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center office in Jerusalem, Dr. Efraim Zuroff. They slammed Germany on Monday and Tuesday respectively for showing a lack of sensitivity towards Nazi era crimes when granting prestigious awards... B’nai B’rith International issued a statement on Monday saying that “Butler’s anti-Israel actions include endorsing the United States Campaign for an Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel – a boycott that was actively promoted by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel.” B’nai B’rith continued: “It is wrong to give the Adorno prize, named in honor of a Jewish intellectual, to anyone who shares these goals...read more. By Herb Keinon
With Iran posed to assume chairmanship later this month of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) for the next three years, member states should significantly downgrade their participation in that framework, Daniel Mariaschin, executive vice president of B’nai B’rith International, has said. As is done every year, Mariaschin, as well as the heads of other major US Jewish organizations – such as the Anti-Defamation league, Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and the World Jewish Congress – will meet together with leaders from some 40 countries attending the UN General Assembly meeting in New York in September. One of the main issues on the agenda of the talks, that will include leaders from a number of NAM countries, will be the subject of Iran’s leadership of that organization, said Mariaschin, currently on a visit to Israel. Part 2: JTA: Ryan hailed by Jewish GOPers, organizations see him as a face of budget confrontations8/14/2012 Anointing Paul Ryan as his running mate, Mitt Romney attached a name and face to his fiscal policy.
Jewish Republicans, including the House majority leader, say they are thrilled with Wisconsin's Ryan emerging as the ticket’s fresh face, hailing the lawmaker as a thoughtful and creative budget guru bent on taming out-of-control federal spending. ...Jewish community officials say that privatizing entitlement programs is more likely to drive up costs for individuals than it is to keep overall costs down. “A competition approach is not appropriate for people who are higher risk,” said Rachel Goldberg, the director of senior advocacy for B’nai B’rith International. Ryan’s plan, she said, would lure younger and healthier Medicare-eligible Americans into cheaper plans, which in turn would drive up costs for older and less healthy citizens...read more. A bipartisan group of six Congress members is sponsoring a bill that would ensure recognition of the plight of 850,000 Jewish refugees displaced from Arab countries since Israel’s War of Independence in 1948.
Their bill in the US House of Representatives also would recognize other displaced populations, including Christians from countries in the Middle East, North Africa and the Persian Gulf...Both B’nai B’rith International and the World Jewish Congress were among those who applauded the proposed legislation. “We want to ensure that the United States makes the rights of Jewish refugees from Arab nations a priority in multilateral discussions about the Middle East conflict,” said Eric Fusfield, B’nai B’rith’s international director of legislative affairs. “Any time refugee issues are discussed in the context of the peace negotiations, the rights of Jewish refugees need to be given their proper place.” ...read more.
