B’nai B’rith Warmly Welcomes the Appointment of Ron Dermer as New Israeli Ambassador to U.S.7/11/2013 B’nai B’rith International has issued the following statement:
B’nai B’rith International warmly welcomes the appointment of Ron Dermer as the next ambassador of Israel to the United States. Dermer will succeed Ambassador Michael Oren. Dermer, a longtime senior advisor to Netanyahu, will certainly promote strong relations between the United States and Israel. The Florida native is well versed in the ways of Washington, having served at the embassy with a portfolio focusing on economic affairs. Given current volatility in the Middle East, it is more important than ever for the two countries to work together to continue tackling the tough issues in the region. B’nai B’rith wishes him luck in his new position and we look forward to working with him. B’nai B’rith Writes Greek Prime Minister Over Concerns with Newly Appointed Health Minister7/9/2013 B’nai B’rith International has issued the following statement:
B’nai B’rith International President Allan J. Jacobs and Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin have sent a letter to Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras expressing concern following the appointment of new health minister Adonis Georgiadis. In the letter, Jacobs and Mariaschin wrote: “Mr. Georgiadis has a history of making anti-Semitic remarks, including accusations that Jews control all major banks, and that the fate of Greek foreign debt was in the hands of the ‘Jewish lobby.’ His publishing house printed and promoted the book The Jews: the Whole Truth, written by Konstantinos Plevris, a self-professed Nazi.” Jacobs and Mariaschin also note: “As you know, we have watched the growth of anti-Semitism in Greece, especially with the rise of the Golden Dawn party, with dismay. Given Mr. Georgiadis’ stated views, we feel it is inappropriate to give him the legitimacy associated with a high-profile position in your cabinet. Mr. Georgiadis’ inclusion in your government will make it more difficult to confront intolerance in Greece, an issue of mutual concern.” Jacobs and Mariaschin asked Samaras to reconsider Georgiadis’ appointment. B’nai B’rith International has issued the following statement:
B’nai B’rith International is appalled and distressed to learn of two very public anti-Semitic incidents in Panama during the last two weeks. The first incident involved a Panamanian governor, Omaira Judith Correa Delgado, who called a Jewish journalist a “Gestapo Jew Girl” in retaliation for penning an article the governor did not like. The second incident occurred when La Prensa, the largest daily newspaper in Panama, published a virulently anti-Semitic piece, evoking Holocaust imagery and Jewish stereotypes. Conjuring Holocaust imagery to attack the Jewish people is reprehensible and should not be tolerated by anyone. The governor, the writer and La Prensa should apologize for their statements and make it clear that such comments have no place in today’s world. B’nai B’rith International has issued the following statement:
B’nai B’rith is outraged over the comments reportedly made by Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay, who blamed the Jewish Diaspora for the recent anti-government protests in Istanbul and other cities across Turkey. Atalay’s accusation is, of course baseless and was an attempt at shifting the blame from the government’s inability to hold itself accountable. These kinds of statements are unacceptable, especially from government leaders. As summer comes into full swing and kids feel the freedom of summer vacation, what they can’t do is take a break from being safe. Whether it’s hitting the pool, going for a bike ride or spending more time online, safety must always be in the mix. Summer is a time of freedom, but not a time to let your guard down. Parents must continue to talk with their children about potential dangers such as stranger danger and sexual assault.
With that in mind, we encourage all parents to download the free Smarter Kids - Safer Kids booklet from the B’nai B’rith International website in an easy-to-read format. The booklet includes information about online security, practical information about what to do when alone at home, what to do if a child is lost or when he or she is faced with a situation that involves improper actions by someone they know. There are role-playing exercises and guided discussions that parents and guardians can use as a starting point to teach their children about how to stay safe. As the brochure says, “If one abduction is prevented, one life saved, this program will be a success.” The guide has been used in communities across the United States at school assemblies as well as by parent groups. It is a tool that every parent should have about a subject that can be difficult and uncomfortable to discuss. Sometimes parents, who have been sure their children would never do something unsafe, are often surprised to learn that their children can be easily manipulated by offenders. You can find the free Smarter Kids - Safer Kids booklet here. The booklet is also available in Spanish here. |
