B’nai B’rith International has issued the following statement:

B’nai B’rith International warmly congratulates Israel’s new president Reuven Rivlin, a former speaker of the Knesset, who was elected today by that body in a runoff election against longtime government official and MK Meir Sheetrit.

B’nai B’rith has worked closely with past Israeli presidents and we look forward to continuing our relationship with president-elect Rivlin. Rivlin has B’nai B’rith roots, as his father, Yosef Yoel Rivlin, is a former president of the B’nai B’rith Jerusalem Lodge. B’nai B’rith’s origins in pre-state Israel date to 1888, when its first lodge was established.

We wish outgoing Israeli President Shimon Peres the very best after serving as president for seven years and remaining a leading figure in Israeli politics for 65 years. B’nai B’rith maintained an excellent relationship with Peres and it was an honor to work with him throughout his presidency. In May B’nai B’rith Europe—with the assistance of the B’nai B’rith World Center in Jerusalem—honored Peres with the Lifetime Award of Merit given to outstanding individuals who have dedicated at least 40 years of service to the well-being of the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
