B’nai B’rith International has opened its Disaster Relief Campaign to assist in two domestic disasters. It will provide assistance to the Idyllwild Help Center in Idyllwild, California in response to the wildfires that have devastated the community, and the Ahava ‘Aina Synagogue in Hawaii whose members have been dealing with the impact from the eruption of the Kilauea Volcano.

We are providing an allocation to assist with the costs of food, utility bills and medical supplies for the Idyllwild Help Center. Many of the victims needing assistance are disabled, seniors on fixed incomes and single mothers who work in the tourist industry which has been decimated as a result of the fires.

In addition to significant issues from the volcano, the Ahava ‘Aina congregation is also dealing with damages from wind, heavy rains and flooding that came as a result of the tropical storm that Hurricane Lane became as it hit the island. The residents live in a state of uncertainty and while the congregation had been seeking a permanent home before the eruption, it faces setbacks as members have been forced out of their homes by the lava, and the dangerous fumes impacting the air quality. There are many young families and seniors who are struggling and we are helping them at this time to celebrate the High Holidays with dignity as many continue to live in shelters or alternative housing.

B’nai B’rith has a tradition of helping communities in distress, which began in 1865 in pre-state Israel when we raised funds to aid victims of a cholera outbreak. Since then, B’nai B’rith has helped countless people across the globe who have faced adversity after natural and man-made disasters.
