U.N. Special Representative for Children in
Armed Conflict Leila Zerrougui
B’nai B’rith International has issued the following statement:
B’nai B’rith International shares Israel’s concerns regarding misconduct by United Nations officials in writing a report on violations of children’s rights in conflict areas. The report was released under the name of U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, but was prepared by U.N. Special Representative for Children in Armed Conflict Leila Zerrougui.
In preparing the report, Zerrougui perversely recommended that Israel be listed among such grave violators of human rights as the Taliban, Boko Haram and ISIS. Ban ultimately nixed that idea, but the report still dedicates 32 paragraphs to Israel, while terrorist organizations and military dictatorships with horrendous human rights records received nearly half of that examination, if not less. With wild disproportionality, the report assails Israel for its defensive operations in Gaza during the summer of 2014 yet apparently fails to mention Hamas.
Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Ron Prosor said that Zerrougui’s office refused Israel’s attempts to provide facts and evidence, and instead worked with biased NGOs that call for a boycott of Israel, some with ties to Hamas.
B’nai B’rith International praises the United States for speaking out during the U.N. Security Council debate on children and armed conflict on the importance of not politicizing reports on the protection of children. During the debate, U.S. Alternate Representative to the United Nations for Special Political Affairs David Pressman said, “Let’s be clear: the idea that the government of Israel, as some have suggested in this debate, would be listed on the same page as ISIL, Boko Haram or Syria is factually and fundamentally wrong.”
This sort of action is par for the course with the United Nations, as Israel awaits another lopsided attack from the United Nations Human Rights Council in the form of its impending report on the 2014 conflict in and around Gaza that is sure to heavily blame the Jewish state for the hostilities.
