Transcript of Sonia Elkrief’s Remarks

Madame President,

As the world is dealing with true emergency conditions, all of us are forced to sit through yet another of these sessions dedicated solely to bashing the only democracy in the Middle East, Israel. Come natural disasters, wars and pandemics, Item 7 is always with us, at each and every regular session. This council never seems to want to miss an opportunity to obsessively attack the nation-state of the Jewish people.

Yet, throughout the day, very little is said about the true cause of the continuation of the conflict: the ongoing incitement and terrorism against Israelis. It is plainly evident in the textbooks used by the Palestinian Authority and UNRWA, let alone the hate-filled curricula in Hamas-run schools in Gaza, that another generation of young Palestinians is being raised to despise and dehumanize Israelis and Jews, and in many cases to glorify violence. If UN member states truly care about resolving the conflict, ending incitement in Palestinian schools and media is the key — not meaningless one-sided condemnations delivered in speeches in Geneva and New York.

We thank all member states that have seen the folly in this biased agenda item and have spoken out against it or have refused to address it. We hope more will do so in the future. This agenda item — and the shameful resolutions, biased commissions of inquiry and the blacklist that have flowed from it — is one of the reasons that the UN continues to have a credibility problem.

Thank you, Madame President.
