B’nai B’rith Letter to Honduran President Regarding Embassy Move to Jerusalem
President of the Republic of Honduras
Tegucigalpa, Honduras
Dear Mr. President:
On behalf of B’nai B’rith International, the world’s oldest Jewish humanitarian, human rights and advocacy organization, we would like to extend our deep appreciation for your principled and courageous decision to move your country’s Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
This follows the important steps taken last September to bolster the strategic alliance between Honduras and Israel when you courageously decided to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and opened a trade office in Jerusalem as an extension of the embassy in Tel Aviv.
As you know, Jerusalem has been central to the Jewish people for 3,000 years. It has been the capital of the State of Israel since 1949, and it will remain the capital of Israel under any peace agreement. A just and long-lasting solution to the conflict will only be possible when the Palestinians reconcile with the idea that Israel has a legitimate right to that land and that it will not be going away. And this is exactly the message that your principled decision has sent. It speaks volumes about your understanding of the conflict and your hope for a peaceful future.
Your actions only confirm the powerful bond between Honduras, the United States and the State of Israel. Please know that the State of Israel and the Jewish people worldwide will always be grateful to you.
Sincerely,
Charles O. Kaufman, President and Daniel S. Mariaschin, Executive Vice President & CEO
