Once again, Hezbollah has attacked Israel’s sovereign territory, in blatant violation of the principles of the United Nations. Mr./Madam President,
Hezbollah has again attacked Israelis, across an international border, on Israel’s sovereign territory, in violation of the principles of the UN — of which Israel is a member state, entitled to security and equality.
Israel withdrew from its security zone along the southern border of Lebanon nearly 20 years ago. Even the UN confirmed this total withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
Israel had held the border area not out of any territorial claim on Lebanon — which continues to deny Israel’s right to exist — but because it had become the source of terrorism against Israelis by the PLO, which also rejected Israel’s existence.
What was the pretext for Hezbollah’s latest attempt to kill and maim Israelis?
Israel’s audacity to protect itself against the ongoing violence, threats and armament of the jihadist organization.
Hezbollah is committed to Israel’s destruction, and is sponsored by Iran, which pledges death to Israel. Nonetheless, Hezbollah is Lebanon’s most powerful military and political force.
Hezbollah was caught having dug underground tunnels deep into Israel, despite the presence of UNIFIL, in a most shocking violation of Security Council resolution 1701.
It has again endangered Israeli and Lebanese civilians by pointing over 100,000 rockets at all of Israel.
If ignored, Hezbollah will further destabilize the Middle East — and present an unparalleled threat to global peace.
