B’nai B’rith International President Gary P. Saltzman and CEO Daniel S. Mariaschin have issued the following statement:

B’nai B’rith International strongly commends the Czech Republic Parliament for recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on May 23, in honor of the 50th anniversary of Jerusalem’s reunification. We also applaud the Czech Republic for its announcement that it will stop paying its membership fees to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) if it does not stop its anti-Israel agenda. According to Ynet News, 112 out of 156 members of parliament voted in favor of this resolution.

B’nai B’rith also sent a letter to Czech Republic President Milos Zeman on the importance of recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

In their letter, Saltzman and Mariaschin wrote: “The Czech Republic can extend Israel such a helping hand by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital at a time when Israel, and Jewish communities, are under assault throughout Europe. Moreover, the Jewish state’s opponents are waging a campaign against Israel at the United Nations, where resolutions that seek to diminish the Jewish legacy in Jerusalem and other parts of Israel are gaining currency. Against such a backdrop, support for Israel ‘is all the more valuable when the poisonous shoots of anti-Semitism once again started to take root on the European continent,’ as you stated in your speech at the Castle.”
