B’nai B’rith International welcomes today’s meeting between President Donald J. Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During their White House joint press conference they addressed Iran’s recent ballistic missile test, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and global terrorism.
“With this visit, the United States, again, reaffirms our unbreakable bond with our cherished ally, Israel,” Trump said.
Trump noted the unfair treatment Israel faces at the United Nations. B’nai B’rith is pleased that the president acknowledged the U.N’s bias toward the Jewish state. We hope the U.S. will make the reversal of anti-Israel discrimination a priority at the world body.
Throughout the conference both Trump and Netanyahu made clear that the United States and Israel would continue their close relationship: “Israel has no better ally than the United States, and I want to assure you the United States has no better ally than Israel,” Netanyahu said.
“B’nai B’rith commends President Trump’s ongoing commitment to Israel’s security and defense, and his assurances that he will up hold existing sanctions on Iran, and that he takes Iran’s behavior as a regional destabilizer and supporter of terrorism seriously,” B’nai B’rith International President Gary P. Saltzman and CEO Daniel S. Mariaschin said.
On Iran Netanyahu said that “President Trump has led a very important effort in the past few weeks, just coming into the presidency he pointed out their violations…I think we can roll back Iran’s aggression and danger…”
B’nai B’rith has long advocated for a two-state solution, which can result only from direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, not from outside measures imposed upon the parties. Such an agreement must include security guarantees and an end to Palestinian rejectionism and incitement.
Netanyahu indicated that “The Palestinians must recognize the Jewish state, they have to stop calling for Israel’s destruction [and] they have to stop educating their people for Israel’s destruction.”
