B’nai B’rith International has written to the head of FIFA, the international body that governs soccer, expressing concern about an effort to suspend Israel from the group.

In the letter to FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, B’nai B’rith International President Allan J. Jacobs and Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin write:

Dear President Blatter:

We write to express our outrage at the ongoing campaign to suspend Israel from FIFA.  This is the latest attempt by Israel’s adversaries to isolate the Jewish state and undermine its standing in the international community.

In 2005, the European Union Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia noted in its working definition of anti-Semitism, “Manifestations could also target the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity.”  The campaign against Israel in FIFA is yet another example of applying a double standard to the Jewish state with a view toward relegating it to pariah status.

We urge you to continue working with representatives of the Israel Football Association and to reject the campaign by Israel’s enemies to cynically use FIFA as another tool with which to demonize and delegitimize the Jewish state.
