Iton Gadol shared our interview with Argentine sports journalist Hernán Feler, whose aunt, Ofelia Roitman, was kidnapped by Hamas (and has since been freed). Since then, Hernán has used his platform to show his support for Israel and demand the release of all the hostages still in Gaza.

As part of the series that explores different facets of Israel’s relationship with Latin America, B’nai B’rith director of Latin American Affairs Eduardo Kohn, and Special Advisor for Latin American and U.N. Affairs Adriana Camisar, spoke with sports journalist Hernán Feler, whose aunt, Ofelia Roitman, was kidnapped by Hamas and released in November.

“All the interviews in this series will now be about the war with Hamas and the drama of the hostages to leave a record for future generations. We believe that Hernán is a great example of courage and struggle. He managed to make the problem visible among his followers, even assuming a personal and professional risk. It is an example of what we must all do, each from the place we can, and that was the spirit of the interview,” they highlighted from B’nai B’rith International.

During the interview, Feler recalled: “That October 7, I got up early here in Argentina because I had to take my daughter to play hockey like every weekend, and already in the family’s WhatsApp group there was a message that something was happening in Israel, that there were attacks. But hey, one tends at that moment, without knowing what was going to happen, to normalize it. We thought it would be a missile and that it would be something more of the same. Then I turned on the TV and saw that they had invaded Israel. There I started talking to my older cousin, my aunt Ofelia’s son. My aunt didn’t answer the cell phone, they believed at that time that it could be due to lack of energy, because they had cut off the power in Israel or because it had run out of battery, because it had no signal. After a few hours, about 6 hours, I found out that my aunt had been taken away for information that my cousins had received.”
