Rep. Engel is the Ranking Member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He also serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee including the Subcommittee on Health, and the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology. He is the founder and co-chair of the Bipartisan Taskforce for Combating Anti-Semitism, the Congressional Israel Allies Caucus, and the House Oil and National Security Caucus, which is seeking clean, energy efficient alternatives to America’s over-reliance on oil. He also sits on the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, the HIV/AIDS Caucus, the Long Island Sound Caucus and the Animal Protection Caucus. Rep. Engel also serves as Chairman of the International Council for Jewish Parliamentarians. Since coming to Congress in 1989, Rep. Engel has been a champion for defending Israel and the Jewish Diaspora community worldwide.
For 12 years prior to his election to Congress, Engel served in the New York State Assembly (1977-1988). Before that, he was a teacher and guidance counselor in the New York City public school system.
“Being Jewish to me is very, very important. It is who I am. It is what I am,” Engel said.
