B’nai B’rith was instrumental in the U.S. recognizing Israel as a new nation. At the urging of B’nai B’rith in 1947, Kansas City Lodge member Eddie Jacobson traveled to Washington, D.C. to convince his friend and former business partner, U.S. President Harry S. Truman, to meet with Zionist leader Chaim Weizmann, resulting in the United States backing the partition of pre-state Israel into a Jewish state and an Arab state. Until that plea from his old friend, Truman had refused to meet with Weizmann.
