U.S. Legislative Affairs
B’nai B’rith International is a Jewish voice on international and domestic policy in defense of Israel and in support of issues of concern to both Jews and non-Jews.
Domestically, B’nai B’rith advocates on behalf of its members before congressional offices and administration officials on a variety of topics.
Issues of Interest
Support for Israel
B’nai B’rith has supported countless Congressional initiatives on Israel, such as energy cooperation programs, resolutions deploring anti-Israel bias at the United Nations and legislation affirming Israel’s right to defend itself. B’nai B’rith is a longtime advocate of U.S. aid to Israel and moderate Arab countries that make peace with Israel.
Iran Sanctions
B’nai B’rith is a vocal supporter of tough sanctions against Iran to stop the Teheran-based regime from advancing its nuclear weapons program and has consistently supported sanctions legislation before Congress. In direct meetings and official letters, we have called on nations around the world to enact the strongest possible sanctions against Iran, the largest state-sponsor of global terrorism. B’nai B’rith has urged the United States and its allies to ramp up all forms of pressure on Iran as the regime continues to delay and dissemble.
Combating Anti-Semitism
B’nai B’rith tirelessly battles anti-Semitism and regularly works with Congress members to respond to hatred of Jews in the United States and abroad. Through regular exchanges with the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Education Department and foreign governments, along with our cooperation with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Organization of American States (OAS), we fight to ensure anti-Semitism is spotlighted and addressed. B’nai B’rith regularly participates in international conferences on anti-Semitism in Europe and Israel.
Holocaust-Era Issues
B’nai B’rith fights for initiatives in Congress and in other spheres to promote justice for Holocaust survivors and their heirs. We continue to prioritize property restitution, education and commemoration while responding forcefully to Holocaust denial on the Internet and elsewhere.
Jews from Middle Eastern Countries
B’nai B’rith International has played a pivotal role in advancing legislation supporting the rights of Jewish refugees from Arab and Muslim countries, a population of nearly one million Jews displaced from their homes in the Middle East who have been largely abandoned by the international community. We also have worked with both Congress and the State Department to protect the cultural patrimony of exiled Jewish communities from the region.
