B’nai B’rith International unequivocally condemns yesterday’s vile stabbing attack near a synagogue in New York City, which came just days after Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a divisive video vilifying the State of Israel and its supporters.

The attack, in which a visibly Jewish man and a second victim were stabbed in broad daylight, is being investigated by the NYPD as a possible hate crime after the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar.”

This was not an isolated act of violence; anti-Semitic attacks have reached alarming levels and continue to rise. New York City is home to the largest Jewish population outside Israel, and its leaders have a responsibility to confront anti-Semitism with urgency, clarity and resolve.

To date, Mamdani has not moved one iota to reverse this dangerous downward spiral of rising anti-Semitism. His relentless fixation on Israel—including his unprecedented and baseless threats to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—is not about international law. It is about delegitimizing the world’s only Jewish state. When public officials repeatedly single out Israel, apply double standards and echo long-standing anti-Semitic tropes, they contribute to an environment in which anti-Semitism is normalized, emboldened and increasingly acted upon.

B’nai B’rith urgently calls on Mamdani to take responsibility for the consequences of his rhetoric, speak out unequivocally against anti-Semitism and take meaningful action to ensure that New York’s Jewish community can live openly and safely. New Yorkers deserve leaders who confront hatred directly, consistently and without equivocation.
