YLN Ventures to Japan as Part of the Kakehashi Project
In March 2016, the B’nai B’rith Young Leadership Network was invited by the Japanese government to participate in The Kakehashi Project – Japan’s Friendship Ties. The program is designed to help build bridges between Japan and the United States, and strengthen the partnerships between these two countries via visits by schools and organizations.

Young Leaders were joined by chapter leaders of Alpha Epsilon Pi for a seven-day program that included official briefings with government officials and legislators, and a home-stay.

“The joint efforts of both Kakehashi and B’nai B’rith International provided the opportunity to ‘bridge’ a connection between American Jews and Japanese culture. In meeting with diplomats, home-stays with Japanese families, and visits to landmarks throughout the country, the trip enabled the members of our group to forge friendships with one another, while also learning more about Japan and its people. The participants left satiated, not only by the delicious food, but also from the incredible experience, a new found respect for the country and its customs, as well as memories that will last forever.”

Vice President of of Programming Rhonda Love reflects on her time in Japan with the B’nai B’rith Young Leadership Network as a part of the Kakehashi Project – Japan’s Friendship Ties.

“One goal of the program was to ask participants to think about the perception they had of Japan before the visit, and later report on their feelings after they had immersed themselves in Japanese culture. We went from big cities like Tokyo, to rural mountain areas. We went from hotel beds to futons on tamari mats. We ate Japanese food— fish and rice with consideration of kosher needs with the provision of fresh vegetables. We participated in a “home stay” visit at several farms as guests of families.”

COVERAGE
The New Jersey Jewish News ran an article on the B’nai B’rith Young Leadership Network visit to Japan as a part of the Kakehashi Project. B’nai B’rith Program Associate Danielle Ross and longtime B’nai B’rith supporter Adam Levoy are featured in the story, detailing the sights and lessons from a week spent immersed in another culture.

“‘We got a real sense of traditional Japanese culture, and it was a chance for the Japanese to learn about our Jewish culture. Some of the families had a grasp on English. Others did not speak English at all,’ said [Danielle] Ross.

But wherever the Americans went, she said, they felt welcome.”
